The Designated Buddy Power Point Presentation was designed by Bob Jones, Merced-Mariposa Counties American Red Cross Chapter
(MMARC).
This program was presented by the Mariposa County Child Welfare Supervisor in Fresno to representatives of Child Death Review Teams from Fresno, Merced, Stanislaus, Tulare, Kern, Madera, San Joaquin, Los Angeles and San Diego counties.
An article was written by the Mariposa County Child Welfare Supervisor to be published in the United Response, a publication by The Los Angeles County Inter-Agency Council on Child Abuse and Neglect and the National Child Fatality Review
(ICAN/NCFR).

Submitted Grant Proposal to the First Five Commission; Received Mini-Grant
Brochures, T-shirts, stickers, stationary, designed and ordered.
Presented the Designated Buddy Power Point Presentation to the management team and subsequently to all Human Services Department employees, presentation also given to the Soroptimist International Service Club of Mariposa.
Press releases and articles appeared in the Mariposa Gazette and the Merced Sun Star.
Letters, brochures and starter kits sent to other American Red Cross Chapters: Greater Los Angeles, Fresno-Madera, Stanislaus, Kern, Tulare, Burbank Fire Department as requested.

Booth at the Mariposa Safe at Home Fair 95 Toddler T-shirts were given away, 5 to Native American, 2 Asian, 5 black, 7 Hispanic and 76 white. Approximately 350 brochures were given to parents and adults. Assisted by the American Red Cross.
National Drowning Prevention Symposium-Palm Springs--Booth with information materials, T-shirts, brochures, stickers, Power Point on laptop computer. Approximately 150 brochures given to professionals from all over the nation. Assisted by the American Red Cross.
Merced Children’s Summit—Information Booth with brochures, T-shirts, stickers in Merced--500 in attendance. Assisted by the American Red Cross.
Brochures given to all County Offices: Probation, District Attorney, Sheriff’s Office, Mariposa Fire Dept., Health Department, Court House, ICES, Behavioral Health, Human Services, and
CDF.
Brochures distributed to J.C. Fremont Clinic/Hospital, Mariposa Family Medicine, to Dr
Weig, to Dr Gil.

The Designated Buddy Power Point Program was presented in Salinas to representatives of the coastal counties including Santa Clara, San Benito, Alameda, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, and the Bay area. Assisted by the American Red Cross.
Presentation to the Mariposa County Foster Parents Association and Foster Parents.
Sent letters and explanation of the program to all State and National Representatives and Senators.

Brochures given to all Mariposa County Elementary Schools to be sent home with all students in Woodland,
MES, Catheys Valley, El Portal, Yosemite, Greeley Hill, and Don Pedro schools.
Ethnicity—1005 students, 8 Asian, 6 Pacific Islander, 89 Hispanic, 71 Native American, 8 Philipino,5 Black, 809 white, and 10 declined. Note: the Don Pedro count or ethnicity is not included. Brochures, however were sent to Don Pedro elementary school for all their students.
Merced WIC Program Staff –Designated Buddy program presented to 36 staff members by Marina Holmes, Merced-Mariposa American Red Cross Chapter, Health and Safety Director.
Designated Buddy Power Point Presentation presented to the Mariposa Fish and Game Service Club by Mariposa Child Welfare Supervisor. Assisted by the Red Cross.
Press releases to Mariposa Gazette and Merced Sun Star. The Mariposa Gazette ran the summer time announcement and logo every week during the summer.
“It is summertime. Families are vacationing, having reunions, going on campouts. Remember to Designate A Buddy, a responsible person to watch young children around water, other hazards and in crowds at shopping malls, amusements parks and on campouts. Young children drown, get lost or hurt when everyone thinks someone else is watching them. Remember, “Every Kid Needs a Designated Buddy.”
Presentation of the Designated Buddy program to the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office on two separate dates, reaching all officers in their in-service program. Presented by the Child Welfare Supervisor.

Livingston Healthy Start Pre-School presentation by Marina Holmes, Merced-Mariposa American Red Cross Chapter, Health and Safety Director, presentation to 56 staff members and students.
Presentation to the Kern County Child Death Review Team at the request of the Kern County Health Department. (Kern County has had 1 toddler drowning a month this year).
Presentation of Designated Buddy program by the Mariposa Child Welfare Supervisor and assisted by the American Red Cross.
Brochures distributed to Mariposa Motels: E. C. Yosemite, Miner’s Inn, Super 8, Comfort Inn, Mother Lode Lodge, Mariposa Lodge, and Best Western. Assisted by the American Red Cross.
Brochures distributed to campsites and motels from Mariposa to Yosemite National Park: KOA, Indian Flats, El Portal Campground, Cedar Lodge, Viewpoint Lodge. Posters placed on bulletin boards at Midpines Post Office, Midpines Market, El Portal Market and
Briceberg. Assisted by the American Red Cross.
Responded to request by Fran Tern, Director for the Minnesota State Child Death and Review Board by sending letter, brochure, pictures, and starter kit.

St Patrick’s Church Health Fair, Merced, CA- 40 Brochures distributed by Marina Holmes,
MMARC.
Mariposa Children’s Fair sponsored by ICES – Booth, brochures, stickers and 35 Toddler T-shirts given away and approximately 75 brochures to parents of young children (the fair was for children 1-12) Assisted by MMARC and Child Welfare Staff.
Mariposa County Fair – Participated in the Booth presentations at First 5, Mariposa Safe Families, and J.C. Fremont Hospital/Clinic. Designated Buddy brochures and Designated Buddy sacks were at these booths as well as Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office, Mariposa Fire Dept, and Mercy Ambulance Child Welfare Supervisor donated time at the booths.
Mariposa Gazette fall/winter announcement:
“Remember to Designate a Buddy to watch young children when they are around water, other hazards and in crowds. The rainy season is coming. Mariposa has many ponds and unfenced bodies of water. Children drown in the fall and winter-time as well as in the summer. A Designated Buddy can keep children safe.”
Proposal for Renewal of the First 5 Mini-Grant submitted.
Attended the Health Fair at J.C. Fremont Hospital. Set up booth and distributed information on Designated Buddy that applies to all seasons. Gave 4 toddler T shirts to a deputy who has children toddler ages and who said he would definitely have his children wear them (the more authentic families we can have wearing these, the farther the word spreads and makes a positive impact).
Attended the National Child Death and Serious Injury Conference in Los Angeles. Met and conferred with professionals across the nation. (Registration, one night’s stay and partial travel paid for by
ICAN/NCFR and given personal invitation to attend. Vacation time taken for travel and paid additional expenses ourselves).
